Leigh Arms

Little Leigh, Northwich

Things to do in the local area

We are an oasis for the weary traveller and regularly play host to walkers who call in and refresh themselves after a trek around the surrounding countryside.

There are many walks available in the locality and a look at some of the links will give you further information. For example, there is a pleasant walk, which starts and ends at the pub. From the car park walk down to the swing bridge on the River Weaver (no need to cross the road). Follow the path until to reach a footpath sign just before Dutton Locks and weir. Turn right and walk across the path through the fields and you will come to the Trent & Mersey Canal Bridge no 211. Turn right again and walk along the canal tow-path. You will pass the Black Prince Boatyard. Continue to Bridge number 208 and then take the footpath to the right. This will bring you back to Willow Green Lane and the Leigh. During wet weather some of this route may be muddy under foot. If you take your dog, please have regard for grazing livestock. Don't forget to close all gates behind you. And always take care near water!

Out & About

There are many places of interest in Cheshire West & Chester and the surrounding areas.

There are some good walks that can begin and end at the pub, or you could start elsewhere and call at the Leigh for some refreshment along the way perhaps? We will put some walks online for more information soon.

Perhaps you are planning a day trip by road? We are located on the main A49 trunk road about ten minutes (heading south toward Whitchurch) from junction ten of the M56 motorway. There are plenty of places to visit just a short drive from us.

The world famous Anderton Boat Lift is a short ride away by car. This connects the River Weaver and the Trent & Mersey Canal via a masterpiece of engineering first completed in 1875. The lift closed in 1983 as it fell into disrepair, but has now been restored to its former glory and a new visitor centre complements the restoration work.

We have many visitors at the Leigh who arrive by boat. The Pub lies between the River Weaver and the Trent & Mersey Canal. The Black Prince hire boat base at Bartington is about a quarter of a mile from the Leigh Arms. From here you can hire boats for short break or longer holidays. Fancy a different day out? You could hire the day boat and end the trip with a meal at the Leigh, ideal for that special occasion.

"Davenports" is across the road near the boatyard and sells home-made and organic produce. The nearest supermarkets and shops are in the village of Weaverham. This is about 30 minutes walk away.

If wildlife is your thing, the Vale Royal Falconry Centre (www.valeroyalfalconry.com/) is only a short hop away (about 15 minutes walk along the River Weaver or 5 minutes by car). You will need to book your visit there in advance though.

Other towns are within easy reach by road. For local bus services see location pages. Acton Bridge railway station is on the west coast main line and services to Crewe and Liverpool run from here. See location pages. A little further away you can find the Cheshire Oaks shopping & entertainment centre, the National Waterways Museum at Ellesmere Port, Blakemere Craft Centre and the City of Chester.

Note that there may be planned works on the canal tow path in the area. For more information see the Canal and River Trust website: canalrivertrust.org.uk
